The Friend’s
Peace Center (abbreviated as CAP in Spanish) was founded in 1983 by
a group of Costa Ricans and United States citizens looking for constructive
methods of promoting peace and social justice. Our founding members
pertain to “The Religious Society of Friends.”
The 2004-2006 operational
strategy of CAP defines the Center’s work today in general terms:
• Constructing
cultures of Peace
• Political impact with goals of social justice and peace
• National and international alliances and influence
• Institutional fortification (internal growth)
These plans of
action are developed throughout our website.
CAP also offers
space for reunions of different groups who share our objectives of
peace and justice. Among these groups are The International League
of Women for Peace and Social Justice, the university group Arco Iris,
groups of migrants and the Institute for Central American Studies.
The center has become a source for resources and training on nonviolent
techniques as alternatives to resolving conflicts. Through this process,
we develop and grow.
Our funding comes
from member and friend donations as well as from the income from our
Hostel, Casa Ridgway which we acquired with donations from our friends
Betty and Henry Ridgway of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and from other
Quakers in the United States and Costa Rica.
We are an open
organization and appreciate the participation of everyone who wishes
to join us in the search for a peaceful and tranquil path toward truth
and justice.
