Anne Frank (1929-1945)

Anheléis Marie Frank was born in 1929 in Frankfurt, Germany into a Jewish family. In 1933, the Frank family fled to the Netherlands because Adolf Hitler was coming into power in Germany and started persecuting the jewish people. On July 6, 1942, the Franks went into hiding in the attic of Otto Frank´s office because Anne´s sister was taken to a concentration camp. The attic was shared with the Van Daan family, and only four other people knew about their hiding place.

Anne was only thirteen when she was forced into hiding, and she kept a diary named Kitty. Today, Anne´s diary is one of the most published books ever, translated into 67 languages. Anne may have been young, but her diary is filled with ideas such as compassion, mutual respect and social justice – topics that were far beyond her thirteen years. Her last entry was written on August 1, 1944, and three days later the German police found the two families and sent them to concentration camps. One month before the Jews were freed, Anne died of typhus. Otto Frank, the father, was the only one from the annex who survived. Despite spending two years of her life in hiding, Anne´s hopefulness, peace and tranquility still touch the hearts of those that read her journal today.
